Nadim Karam is an architect and multidisciplinary artist born in Senegal and working from Beirut and Rotterdam. 

Karam’s formative years in Lebanon and his doctoral studies in Japan are defining influences in his work. From his early projects of performance art in Tokyo, he developed a language of forms relating to spaces, memories, and peoples. 

Nadim Karam’s consistent production of work across disciplines is an optimistic act of rebellion as well as an affirmation of the power of creativity against the tedium, soullessness or terror that at one time or another afflict our lives and cities.

In 1996, Karam founded in Beirut Atelier Hapsitus, which branched to Rotterdam in 2020 as Nadim Karam Studio (NKS), a multi-disciplinary practice, focused on re-framing contextual concerns with a global relevance and expressing these through an original urban vocabulary. Together, they have realised numerous major site-specific public art projects around the world, commissioned by cities and institutions. 

From 1994 to the present, they have realised major temporary large-scale art projects in Prague, Beirut, Dubai and Nara, and permanent projects in Tokyo, Kuwait, Brussels, Yerevan, Suzhou, Al Ula and Melbourne, which was recognised with three Australian awards.

Nadim Karam was selected in 2002 by the UN as co-chairman of the conference on the reconstruction of Kabul and by the first Rotterdam Biennale as the curator for Lebanon. He has received many awards amongst which, in 2002, for The Archaic Procession project in Beirut, which was one of five selected worldwide by the Van Alen Institute in New York to highlight the role they played in the rejuvenation of city life and morale after a disaster.

The pivotal point of his investigations- no matter the themes he tackles- remains ultimately, the human mind’s reactions to the eventualities it faces. His public art in particular focuses on the conviction that cities need to dream; he re-examines contextual issues with global significance and relevancy, and his work engages in enhancing perceptions of pluralism and difference within a society as a source of enrichment rather than a reason for conflict.

Les années de formation de Karam au Liban et ses études de doctorat au Japon sont des influences déterminantes dans son travail. Dès ses premiers projets de performance à Tokyo, il a développé un langage de formes liées aux espaces, aux souvenirs et aux peuples. 

La production constante d'œuvres multidisciplinaires de Nadim Karam est un acte de rébellion optimiste ainsi qu'une affirmation du pouvoir de la créativité contre l'ennui, le manque d'âme ou la terreur qui, à un moment ou à un autre, affligent nos vies et nos villes.

Ensemble, ils ont réalisé de nombreux projets d'art public spécifiques dans le monde entier, commandés par des villes et des institutions. 

De 1994 à aujourd'hui, ils ont réalisé d'importants projets artistiques temporaires à grande échelle à Prague, Beyrouth, Dubaï et Nara, ainsi que des projets permanents à Tokyo, Koweït, Bruxelles, Erevan, Suzhou, Al Ula et Melbourne, qui a été récompensée par trois prix australiens.

Nadim Karam a été choisi en 2002 par l'ONU comme co-président de la conférence sur la reconstruction de Kaboul et par la première Biennale de Rotterdam comme conservateur pour le Liban. Il a reçu de nombreux prix, notamment en 2002 pour le projet The Archaic Procession à Beyrouth, l'un des cinq sélectionnés dans le monde par l'Institut Van Alen de New York pour souligner le rôle qu'ils ont joué dans le rajeunissement de la vie et du moral de la ville après une catastrophe.

Le point central de ses recherches - quels que soient les thèmes abordés - reste en définitive les réactions de l'esprit humain face aux éventualités auxquelles il est confronté. Son art public, en particulier, se concentre sur la conviction que les villes ont besoin de rêver ; il réexamine les questions contextuelles ayant une signification et une pertinence mondiales, et son travail s'engage à améliorer les perceptions du pluralisme et de la différence au sein d'une société comme une source d'enrichissement plutôt que comme une raison de conflit.
